Light sources: Solstones
Light
in the dungeon is a sacred thing, especially because of what lies in the dark
in the various dungeons. Luckily this was for the most part understood by the
architects, and there is a great deal of functioning lights either by magic or
maintenance. The most prevailing form of light in the dungeon is Solstones, a
gleaming solid material that is uniform and has a warm and tingling feel when
touched. Many alchemists and scholars understand this material to have a great
deal of unique properties compared to other sources of light, mainly the
practical impossibility of solstones being able to shine light without any
obvious source of power. Solstones in fact are only slightly warm, which was
initially puzzling until it was accepted that these stones were magical. The
other unique property that solstones have is strange similarities to liquid
instead of solid. If you were to take a solstone and crack it into pieces which
is fairly easy, it would look as if the shine drains and the light inside was
some sort of viscous fluid. Even though it is fairly concerning that these
lights are very brittle, its mainly because they are cultivated from growing
them like crystals or finding rubble with bits of it in it. The lights found in
dungeons that are only a bit on the condemned side are affixed to grids of
metal, and a consistent heat runs through them to keep the solstones bright.
The alchemy for solstones is pretty straight forward, simply requiring spent
solstones and a consistent heat source, which can yield shards for use. Many
use shards for lamps, sconces, and any other light fixtures. They can also be
used to cultivate small glowing organisms that float about and eat smoke and
dust. Solstones are bountiful sources for alchemical drafts and represent a
source of solace and a buffer against forces of darkness in the various dungeon
settlements.
